Publications

Since the first publication, the doctoral thesis in 1979, there have been numerous publications from Hanover (1979-1983, 1985-1993), Stanford (1983/84), Kiel (1993-1996) and again from Hanover. The vast majority of the studies were interdisciplinary team efforts, even across faculty boundaries. Many clinical studies were multi-centre, and in the core areas of our work also international.
A number of important papers with the first description of a new finding or an innovative technique were not published in high-ranking journals, but had a significant impact on subsequent clinical implementation. Less than 1% of our publications were based on randomised, prospective studies. The entire work comprises almost 1500 publications (PubMed), which are listed here in subsections with a selection of the (subjectively perceived) most important papers

Books

Dr Axel Haverich's works offer in-depth insights into modern medicine and science by presenting complex topics in an understandable way, thus opening up valuable perspectives for both experts and interested laypeople.

Der menschliche Faktor: Ein Chirurg über die verlorene Kunst des Heilens

As a cardiac surgeon for many years, I was able to provide many impulses in transplantation medicine in changing teams. We also initiated a number of innovations in heart and aortic surgery with a wide reach. My life has been characterised by modern medicine.

And yet I am plagued by doubts about the operation of today's medicine. Staff shortages, economic pressure and poor training make people ill instead of healthy. There is a lack of time and often a lack of awareness of how important it is to know the patient's personal history. In the book, I call for illness to be recognised not only as damage to be repaired, but also as a manifestation of the whole personality and for greater emphasis to be placed on disease prevention. This is the only way to get the fatal advance of chronic diseases under control.

Atherosclerosis Pathogenesis and Microvascular Dysfunction

Microvascular dysfunction would explain why the known risk factors actually increase the risk for the individual.
This pathomechanism would apply not only to obstructive atheroma formation, but also to aneurysmal dilatation and dissection of the aorta and peripheral arteries. Viewed through this lens, new preventive and therapeutic possibilities arise.
